Walden and Other Writings
by Henry David Thoreau
This is a hardback Modern Library edition of Thoreau's most well-known and influential work, Walden. It also includes several key essays such as Civil Disobedience and Slavery in Massachusetts, works which had a lasting influence on figures like Gandhi and Martin Luther King Junior. This edition features a foreword and bibliographical notes by Townsend Scudder. It was edited by Brooks Atkinson, who has gathered some of Thoreau's most influential writings, and offers a comprehensive look at his thoughts on nature, society, politics and personal freedom. Atkinson has also provided the insightful Introduction to this edition.
Originally published in this form by Modern Library in 1935, this early 1970's reprint is in very good condition. It is bound in maroon boards with cream endpapers and with a typical early 70's dust jacket design by R.D. Scudelleri. The dust jacket shows only light shelf wear but has a small square sticker mark towards the top right corner - visible in the first picture. The book is otherwise in excellent condition, with bright, clean pages throughout and no creases, tears or annotations.
