Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea
by Jules Verne
Heron Books, 1969
This is a vintage hardback edition of Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea by Jules Verne. This classic adventure story featuring the world's first submarine, the Nautilus, was serialised from 1869 to 1870 and was first published in full in 1871. It formed part of Verne's "Voyages Extraordinaire" series, many of which are considered to be the foundations of the science fiction genre. Verne had an uncannily prescient imagination and his works have inspired generations of writers and scientists alike.
Heron Books have rightly included Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea in their literary collection of Books That Have Changed Man's Thinking, a collection of 29 influential works of fiction and non fiction. Heron's original set was published in 1969, finely bound in quarter imitation leather with gilt blocking.
This book is in very good condition both inside and out with no creases, tears, annotations or other markings. As per the rest of the set, this book is bound in tan leatherette with dark green backstrap with gold blocked title and design. The endpapers and pastedowns are in matching dark green and gold and there is a yellow ribbon bookmark. Original monochrome plates throughout are by David Knight
A fabulous feature of this particular edition is the Introduction and Appreciation by Douglas Hill - a very interesting, perceptive and well illustrated look at Jules Verne, his life and times and at this work in particular.
A gift for all ages.
