The Solid Mandala

First edition, published in the UK by Eyre and Spottiswoode in 1966. This hardback book with very collectible dust jacket is in good condition with no creases or tears inside or out. The dust jacket has a minor nibble at the top of the spine, and there is a longish dedication to a previous owner on the flyleaf - please see pictures. Apart from that there are no markings or annotations. 
The dust jacket design and artwork for this first edition were done by Desmond  Digby, an artist and illustrator known for his contributions to book cover designs, stage set designs and children's book illustrations. Digby and White were close friends and collaborated on many projects, with Digby submitting a portrait of White for the Archibald Prize in 1965. This portrait, along with the original art for the cover of The Solid Mandala, is now held at The Art Gallery of NSW. This painting, titled Moon Over House, was a bequest of Patrick White to the gallery in 1991 - please see the last image here.
White won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1973, the first Australian to do so. His win brought international attention to Australian literature and solidified his legacy as one of the 20th century's most important writers.
In The Solid Mandala, he explores themes of duality, introspection and the complexity of human relationships by looking at the lives of twin brothers, Waldo and Arthur Brown.  Digby's dust jacket art seems to reflect the subdued yet intense atmosphere of the novel.  It complements White's tone and alludes clearly to the 'mandala' of the title, a spiritual and psychological symbol of wholeness and unity. 
The collaboration between Nobel Laureate Patrick White and artist Desmond Digby makes this first edition special. It is prized by collectors not only for White's literary contribution, but also for Digby's interpretation of the novel's themes through visual art. 
Though not in mint condition, it is a very good, bright copy and will be sold with protective archival plastic covering to protect agains any further nibbling to the jacket.
