The Pursuit of Love
Nancy Mitford
Nancy Mitford's witty and affectionate satire on the British upper classes between the wars was an instant hit with both public and critics alike when it was first published in 1945. This comedic novel, albeit with tragic overtones, focuses on the adventures of the Radletts, an unconventional, not to say eccentric, family of British aristocrats. Nancy casts her wickedly funny eye over the Radlett goings on, but as the Mitford sisters in real life were as glamorously notorious as it was possible to be, we are in no doubt that these characters and their escapades were closely modelled on Nancy Mitford's own family.
This is a beautiful 1991 Folio Society edition, printed in 1995. As is usual with the Folio Society, the production values are top notch, with brightly illustrated boards, elegant typeface and endpapers and pastedowns in a dusty pink.
The book is in excellent condition both inside and out with no tears, creases, annotations or marks of any kind. It comes complete with its original slipcase, which is also in very good condition generally, but does have one small white mark on the spine - please see pic. The introduction by Hugo Vickers, written specifically for this Folio Society edition, is entertaining and informative and the illustrations on the cover and throughout by Roland Pym are a delight, complementing Mitford's writing to perfection.
What are these tragic overtones you may ask? World War Two is looming somewhere on the horizon ...

" The Radletts were always either on a peak of happiness or drowning in black waters of despair; their emotions were on no ordinary plane, they loved or they loathed, they laughed or they cried, they lived in a world of superlatives."
