The Old Man and the Sea was first published in the UK by Jonathan Cape in 1952, not long after it was released in the United States. This novella with its concise prose and profound themes of resilience and dignity, revived interest in Hemingway's work after a somewhat lacklustre period, and led to him receiving the Pulitzer Prize in 1953. His contribution to modern literature was celebrated the following year, in 1954, when he received the Nobel Prize for Literature.
