The Painted Photograph 1839 - 1914

Origins, Techniques, Aspirations

Authors: Heinz K. Henisch and Bridget A. Henisch

Published by The Pennsylvania State University Press, 1996.

This beautifully produced book is the first fully detailed account of the art of 'overpainting', which went hand in hand with photography's growing popularity from its earliest beginnings in the 19th century. The authors have gone to extraordinary lengths to source the 132 illustrations that make this book such a pleasure to look at. The text is engaging and informative, containing a wealth of information on the history of overpainting on several early photographic forms such as daguerreotypes, tintypes, imprinted porcelain, milk glass, magic lantern slides and more. It is presented in a two column format, which adds even further character to this well designed, award winning book.

This is a vintage hardback first edition with original dustjacket and is in very good condition. It has green full cloth binding with gold lettering of the title and publisher (Penn State Press) to the spine. The dust jacket has minor edge wear to the corners but no creases or tears. There is also slight foxing to the endpapers and title page, but is in mint condition inside otherwise. It has been protected with an archival mylar jacket which was removed for photography, but which will be replaced for shipping when sold.

It measures 29 cm x 23 cm x 3 cm and weighs 1.35 kg.
