A little history:
Lolita was first published in 1955 by Olympia Press in Paris after having been rejected by American and British publishers. After its success in Europe, G.P. Putnam and Sons published the first American edition in 1958, and this was closely followed by the Weidenfeld and Nicolson British first edition in 1959. Though still controversial, these publications confirmed Nabokov's status as a literary heavyweight and solidified the novel as one of the 20th Century's most important works of literature.
Guild Publishing, based in London, was a prominent late 20th century book club publisher. They published both classics and contemporary titles in beautiful, well-bound, visually appealing editions, often with the distinctive cover art and gilding seen here. Collectible.
