Jane Eyre

by Charlotte Brontë

Originally published in 1847 under the pseudonym 'Currer Bell', this edition of Jane Eyre  was published and reset  by The Folio Society in 1996. It is bound in green watered silk boards and features the wood engravings of Simon Brett. This book does not have a slipcase, which means that its original matching green slipcase has either been lost or, equally possible, that this book was originally part of a set of two novels in a single slipcase, the other being Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë.

Either way, this edition is no plain Jane! The watered green silk and gold lettering on the spine, though difficult to photograph, make for an elegant book that will look great on any bookshelf. The book is in very good condition, both inside and out. There are two tiny marks on the cover, barely discernable in the last two pictures here, indicated with an arrow.

Charlotte Brontë used a pseudonym to conceal both her identity and gender - something that was common for female authors at the time. Jane Eyre received critical acclaim on its release and remains a cornerstone of English literature. The novel's perfect blend of dark, mysterious setting and deeply emotional narrative make it a quintesential example of the gothic romance novel - a must for lovers of the genre!
