Irish Fairy and Folk Tales
Edited and selected by W.B. Yeats
These stories, collected and edited by William Butler Yeats, bring together a wide selection of Irish folktales, fairy lore, country legends and mythology. They were first published in 1888 and have been reprinted many times and in many different editions. On offer here is the Dorset Press New York, 1986 edition, which is a careful reproduction and stays true to the original text as edited by Yeats. It includes an Introduction by Yeats and is, as its frontispiece announces, 'profusely illustrated' with evocative black and white drawings. The illustrator, however, is uncredited and remains a mystery - some suggestions have been Harry Clarke and Jack B. Yeats, but I am not convinced - any ideas appreciated!
W. B. Yeats was deeply invested in the Irish Literary Revival and believed that the folk traditions of Ireland were key to an understanding of of the Irish identity and spirit.
This hardback book with dustjacket is in very good condition apart from a couple of flaws noted here: There is a discolouration at the bottom of the Introduction pages, some very minor foxing of the text block edges and a little age related toning to the front and rear endpapers. The dustjacket is in very good condition, showing only minor shelfwear.
This is a classic anthology, full of fairies, changelings, banshees, leprechauns and the many magical occurrences of Irish rural life, brought together by Yeats at a time when the storytelling traditions of Ireland were in danger of fading. Recommended!
